    What should a contract sheet metal fabricator buy first?

    A job shop is defined by a mix it does not control: one-off brackets alongside batches of fifty, 0.8 mm enclosure panels alongside 8 mm structural plate, and drawings that arrive the same week they are due. That rules out most dedicated automation.     A panel bender is usually the wrong first purchase for a job shop, and we say that as a company that manufactures them. A shop whose typical order quantity is under twenty pieces will spend more time programming than bending. The sensible sequence is laser, press brake, turret punch — and a panel bender only when a specific customer's repeat panel work justifies it on its own.

    Three problems that are structural, not technical

    Setup time is your real cost of goods

    On an order of ten parts, programming, tooling and first-article proving can exceed the machining time several times over. This is why tooling-free processes matter more in a job shop than raw cutting speed — a laser that needs no tooling and a press brake with fast clamp changes beat a faster machine that needs a die order.

    Buying for the average part loses the extremes

    Shops size machines against typical work and then subcontract everything thick or long, giving away margin on exactly the jobs that carry it. Press brakes from 63 t to 320 t and 1500 to 4100 mm exist so that the extremes stay in house. Deciding which extremes are worth owning is the actual purchasing question.

    Automation bought too early sits idle

    A panel bender, a coil line or a robot cell all reward repetition. In a shop with genuinely mixed work they become expensive floor space. The right sequence is to earn the repeat volume first, then automate the part families that have stabilised — which is a conversation we would rather have honestly than sell into.

    Almost every successful job shop we supply has followed this order. Skipping ahead is the most common capital mistake in the sector.

    Stage 1 — Cut and fold

    Right fit

    Unpredictable mix, small batches, wide thickness range and short lead times — handled by tooling-free cutting and flexible forming, with punching added as repeat work accumulates.

    Wrong fit

    Buying a panel bender, a coil line or a robot cell as a first machine for genuinely mixed work. These reward repetition, and a job shop's defining characteristic is that it has none yet.

    Keep a press brake

    The press brake is not the fallback here — it is the core forming machine. The question for a job shop is how many, at what tonnage and length, not whether to keep one.

    Standards this equipment is built and guarded to

    Risk assessment follows EN ISO 12100; safety-related control functions such as light-curtain interruption and emergency stop are specified to EN ISO 13849-1. Hydraulic press brakes supplied into the EU are built against EN 12622. Machines placed on the EU market carry CE marking under Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC with the accompanying technical file. Quality management is certified to ISO 9001, and machined structural tolerances follow ISO 2768. Hydraulic press brakes are built against EN 12622, and general dimensional tolerances on contract work are usually specified to ISO 2768 medium or fine class — worth agreeing with each customer in writing, because it is the most common source of contract disputes in fabrication.

    On the machines this means fully enclosed rear fencing, protective covers on all protruding moving parts, laser guarding that halts motion when the protected zone is broken, over-tonnage protection on turret punch presses, and grating-ruler offset-load detection on panel benders.

    If a single customer's repeat panel work grows large enough to fill a machine on its own, that is the point to look at a panel bender — not before. We would rather tell you to wait than sell a machine that spends its life being programmed.

    Frequently asked questions

    Should a job shop buy a panel bender?
    Usually not as an early purchase, and we say that as a panel bender manufacturer. Panel benders reward repetition: flat four-sided panels in 0.5–2.0 mm, run many times. If your typical order is under twenty pieces across constantly changing geometry, programming time will exceed bending time and the machine will be underutilised. The point to reconsider is when one customer's repeat panel work is large enough to fill a machine on its own.
    Laser or turret punch first?
    Laser, for almost every contract shop. It needs no tooling, handles every material and thickness you are likely to quote, and lets you accept work you have never made before. A turret punch becomes compelling once repeating hole-pattern work is a regular part of your order book — at that point it is dramatically faster than a laser on those specific parts and adds louvring, ribbing and embossing that a laser cannot do at all.
    What laser power should we buy?
    Set by your thickest regular material rather than your average. Options run from 1 kW to 6 kW, with 3 kW and 6 kW most common. Power also drives the electrical supply: a 3 kW unit has an installed capacity of ≤50 kVA with a 60 kVA supply recommended, and a 6 kW unit ≤100 kVA with 120 kVA recommended. Bring your material list and we will size it rather than sell up.
    How many press brakes and at what tonnage?
    The useful question is which extremes you want to keep in house. Machines run from 63 t / 1500 mm to 320 t / 4100 mm. Shops that subcontract everything thick or long give away margin on precisely the jobs that carry it, but a machine bought for work that appears twice a year is idle capital. We build this from your actual job history rather than a rule of thumb.
    How much does a starter cell cost?
    There is no list price, because a job shop cell is sized to the range you want to quote. Four factors move the figure most: laser power and format (1–6 kW, 3015 to 6025), press brake tonnage and length (63 t / 1500 mm to 320 t / 4100 mm), whether a turret punch is included from the start, and control specification (DELEM, ESA, FANUC or Siemens, which is often decided by what your local service network already supports). A laser plus one press brake and a three-machine cell differ substantially. Send a representative month of job drawings and we return a sized proposal within 24 hours.
    Can we specify a control system our technicians already know?
    Yes. Press brakes are available with DELEM 53T, 58T, 66T or 69T, or optional Italian ESA. Turret punch presses run a Windows-platform RTEX bus system as standard, with FANUC, Siemens or Rexroth available on request. For a contract shop this often matters more than headline specification, because it decides how quickly a fault is diagnosed locally.
    Which tolerance class can we commit to on contract work?
    Press brakes use high-precision grating rulers with closed-loop feedback and mechanical crowning compensation; turret punching holds ±0.1 mm. In practice most contract work is agreed to ISO 2768 medium or fine class. We recommend stating the class in your quotations explicitly, because unstated tolerance expectations are the most common source of dispute in contract fabrication.
